Do I need to use stitch markers with my crochet?

Stitch markers are a great tool for any crocheter to have in their kit. They can help you keep track of your progress, count stitches and create unique patterns.

First, let’s talk about the benefits of using stitch markers in crochet. Here are a few:

  • Keeping track of your progress: When you’re working on a large project, it can be hard to keep track of where you are in the pattern. Stitch markers can help you mark important points in the pattern, such as the beginning of a round or the location of a decrease.
  • Counting stitches: If you need to count a specific number of stitches, stitch markers can help you do so quickly and easily. Simply place a marker every X number of stitches, and you can easily count how many you’ve made.

Now, let’s talk about buying handmade stitch markers to support other small businesses. One of the great things about the crochet community is the many talented makers who create beautiful handmade tools and accessories. By buying handmade stitch markers, you can support these small businesses and add unique and beautiful tools to your crochet kit.

Here are a few tips for buying handmade stitch markers:

  • Look for quality materials: When buying handmade stitch markers, look for those made from high-quality materials, such as sterling silver, stainless steel, or high-quality glass or acrylic beads.
  • Choose a style that fits your needs: Handmade stitch markers come in many different styles and designs, so choose one that fits your needs and preferences. Do you prefer simple and classic, or colorful and quirky?
  • Support local makers: Check out local craft fairs or online marketplaces like Etsy to find handmade stitch markers from local makers. This can be a great way to support small businesses in your community.

In conclusion, using stitch markers in crochet can be a helpful tool for any crocheter. By using them to keep track of your progress, count stitches, and create unique patterns, you can enhance your crochet projects and make the process easier. Additionally, buying handmade stitch markers can be a great way to support other small businesses and add unique and beautiful tools to your crochet kit. So next time you’re in the market for new stitch markers, consider supporting a small business and adding some handmade charm to your kit.

One reply on “Do I need to use stitch markers with my crochet?”

I couldn’t live without my stitch markers for the following reasons:
1. crocheting in the round, spiral fashion keeps one from losing count/getting lost
2. marking off large numbers of chains or foundation stitches in manageable sets avoids gaving to count numerous times
3. separating where pattern repeats land, over a large area/width, helps prevent skipped stitches or working into the wrong stitch.

Yes, a piece of yarn works, but locking stitch markers are so much more convenient, especially in multiple colors. Personally, I only use the simple plastic ones. The fancy ones are cute, but are often heavy and relatively expensive. I purchased 200 at Amazon for a fairly low price and they came in a nice storage box.

Steer clear of rigid plastic ones (often in clear colors) as they’re not very flexible and break easily.
