Welcome to my blog! Today, I’m excited to share a free crochet pattern for a tapestry that holds a powerful message of peace. This project is inspired by the courageous statement made by artist Bambie Thug during the Eurovision Song Contest, where they attempted to display the word “ceasefire” on their face. Although their message was censored due to the contest’s non-political stance, it resonated deeply with me and sparked the creation of this tapestry.
In this pattern, we will be using Ogham script, an ancient Irish alphabet, to spell out “ceasefire.” This tapestry is not just a beautiful piece of crochet art, but also a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza and the urgent need for peace.
As we crochet each stitch, we’ll be participating in a form of craftivism, using our creative skills to make a statement and inspire change.
Free Pattern
Each set of lines represents a different letter; Ogham is written vertically from bottom to top.
When I first created this pattern I included the diagonal lines that represent the letter R in the chart. Once I started to crochet them, I found I wasn’t happy with the effect I was getting. So I frogged and decided that I would create the space for the letter R but that I would use surface crochet to add the diagonal lines. Here is a wonderful tutorial by Naztazia Crochet for how to add this. Note I only added one row of surface crochet for each line (5 diagonal lines to make up the R), you could do two, side by side, if you wanted to create a thicker line. It’s completely up to you! (I kind of liked the scratchy appearance of one line.)
Materials
Hook: 4.5mm
Yarn: This pattern will work well with DK or Aran weight yarn. Yarn used in the picture is Cream- Women’s Institute Aran Yarn (660m (722yds) per 400g skein; 100% Acrylic), Black- Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (100% Acrylic, 184m (201yds)/500g (17.64oz).
