As part of my ongoing series, I’m exploring the many ways we can use our crochet skills to support community projects. Today, I want to share an exciting opportunity to contribute to a cause that might resonate with many of you.

For those who love to knit, consider making toys and blankets for cats, especially for their Christmas presents. These handmade items can bring joy and comfort to our feline friends, and there’s a special toy that stands out as a favorite.
What is the Cause?
Cats Protection is always in need of handmade toys and blankets for the cats in their care. One of their most popular toys is the catnip-powered ‘Captain Cat-Battler’ mouse toy, originally designed by Lauren O’Farrell (www.whodunnknit.com) for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Cats have been enjoying these toys for years! They are also always happy to have cozy handmade cat blankets!

What Do They Need?
If you enjoy knitting and want to contribute, here’s how you can help:
- Toys: Handmade toys like the ‘Captain Cat-Battler’ mouse are highly appreciated.
- Materials: Avoid stretchy yarns or small plastic items like buttons for eyes to prevent injury or ingestion.
- Safety: Ensure toys are safe by avoiding loose-weave patterns and monitoring for signs of wear.
- Pattern: You can find more information about the pattern HERE
- Consider Personalities: My cat Jack loved playing with crochet mice. He would throw them around and tear them apart, but thankfully, he wasn’t one for chewing or swallowing yarn. Jack always let me crochet without interruption. However, my new kitten, Bean, is obsessed with yarn and attacks it every time I crochet. I wouldn’t trust her with a crochet mouse, as she would definitely eat the yarn, which can be very dangerous for cats. If making toys for your cats, think about their personalities. When donating to the center, trust that all cats are well monitored with any toys they are given.
- Blankets: Handmade blankets provide comfort and warmth to cats.
- Materials: Use durable yarns and avoid large needles that create loose weaves.
- Safety: Make sure blankets do not have loose threads or components that could be ingested.
When Do They Need It?
These items are always in demand, especially around Christmas. You can donate your creations any time by sending them or dropping them off at your nearest Cats Protection adoption centre.
