Crochet is not just a hobby, it can also be a great way to start a business. With the growing popularity of handmade, unique items, starting a crochet business can be a great opportunity to tap into this market and turn your passion for crochet into a profitable venture.

Flexibility: One of the biggest benefits of starting a crochet business is that it allows you to work from home. This means you can be your own boss, set your own schedule, and have the flexibility to work around your family and other commitments.
Low set up Cost: Crochet is a relatively low-cost business to start, as you only need a few basic supplies to get started. If you’ve been crocheting as a hobby, it’s likely you will have a lot of the items you already need to start selling. Some makers choose to only work on a commission basis, meaning that they only buy yarn when they receive an order, therefore reducing the up front cost even more.
Creativity: Starting a crochet business also allows you to be creative and express yourself. You can create unique patterns and designs, and experiment with different materials and techniques to create one-of-a-kind items that stand out in the market.
Sustainability: Crochet is the very opposite of fast fashion. It’s slow fashion! As crochet cannot be made on a machine, you have the opportunity to offer people sustainable, ethically made items. Sadly, that is lacking in our current market. You can even go a step further and use natural fibers and yarns, and upcycle fabrics to create eco-friendly items.
Community: Lastly, starting a crochet business can also be a great way to build community and connect with other like-minded individuals. Many crochet business owners find that they enjoy the opportunity to network and collaborate with other crafters and gain support from the crochet community.

I didn’t set out initially to start my business to make money. I started Jack’s Yarn as a way to remember Jack, my 15 year old ginger cat who passed away. The more I researched setting up a crochet business, the more inspired I became. I hadn’t realized that I actually already had a lot of the skills and expertise to do this. And I bet you do too! This is the first blog post in a series where I will be looking at the steps I took to open Jack’s Yarn. Happy Crocheting!
