Yarn With Purpose: A Scarf For Lewy 2024

As part of my ongoing series, I’m exploring the many ways we can use our crochet skills to support community projects. Today, I want to share an exciting opportunity to contribute to a cause that might resonate with many of you.

On October 17th, 2024, an inspiring event is taking place at Central Hall in Central Buildings, Oldham Street, Manchester, M1 1JQ, to raise awareness for Lewy body dementia. While I am not affiliated with the organizing group, I believe this is a wonderful chance for any crafters to make a difference.

What is the Cause?

Lewy body dementia is the third most common disease that causes dementia among older people, yet it remains largely unknown and often misdiagnosed. Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia requires different support and treatment, and those affected face unique challenges. Increasing awareness is essential for ensuring better support and promoting more research into this debilitating condition. The Lewy Body Society raise awareness and support researchers, people living with dementia and their families. You can find out more about what support they offer HERE.

What Do They Need?

They are calling on the crafting community to knit or crochet scarves for the event where they will wrap the building in scarfs! Volunteers will sew together all the individual scarves and we will transport them to Central Hall in Manchester for the event. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Scarf Specifications:
    • Width: 30cm/1 foot
    • Length: Any length (the longer, the better)
    • Design: Any yarn, stitch, or pattern. Feel free to get creative with colors and designs. While the Lewy Body Society’s brand colors include dark and light blue with polka dots, you are welcome to use any colors or patterns you prefer.
  • Show Your Support Online: If knitting isn’t your forte, you can still contribute by taking a selfie wearing a scarf and sharing it on social media with the hashtag #AScarfForLewy. You can also send your photo to the event organizers to post on their channels.

When Do They Need It?

The deadline to send your scarf is September 26th, 2024. Here’s where you can send your completed scarves:

If you’re attending the event in Manchester, you can also wear your scarf to show your support in person.

What Will Happen to the Scarves Afterwards?

After the event, the scarves will be separated and donated to homelessness and refugee groups to ensure they are put to good use. Additionally, any celebrity scarves will be auctioned to raise funds for The Lewy Body Society.

From looking at their event page it seems that they are happy with any pattern, colour or design as long as its 1 foot wide. 😊 the plan is to join them together and wrap the whole building! Very ambitious! I plan to donate a regular double crochet (US terms) scarf, long enough for an adult in a teal colour. 😊
